Knitting in Public

How an independent Chinese-language video practice turned personal taste into trusted recommendations—and moved from the screen to a table in Paris.

The central idea

Influence becomes meaningful when somebody moves from watching to choosing, making or meeting.

Why publish

I began knitting to make the passage of time tangible. Minutes that could disappear into scrolling accumulated, stitch by stitch, into something I could touch. Publishing began as a way to examine that process—not simply display finished objects.

Since February 2025, the practice has become a Chinese-language video podcast about selection: which projects are worth the time, what materials change the result, where beginners get stuck and what I would choose differently next time.

An independent editorial system

01

Choose

Projects with a real decision inside them—not only a finished garment.

02

Test

Patterns, yarns and techniques through my own making, including what failed.

03

Translate

Turn personal experience into useful selection criteria for another knitter.

04

Publish

Research, film, present, edit and distribute every episode independently.

EP.00 and EP.3.5 are intentional parts of the thirteen-episode count. Topic selection, research, filming, presenting, editing and publishing are all handled independently.

A beginner's guide,
in Paris.

In April 2026, I organised and delivered a two-hour Chinese-language introduction to knitting through Bonjour Girls. The session covered yarn types, tools, seasonal project choices and learning resources.

Bonjour Girls provided the platform. Although four hosts appeared on the listing, I secured the venue, promoted the event and delivered it in person; the other listed hosts did not share those operating responsibilities.

What this is becoming

Trusted taste,
without content churn.

This is not yet a large community, and I do not present it as one. Its value lies in a smaller but legible chain: independent judgment becomes useful content; content shapes a choice; a shared interest creates a reason to gather.

The strongest editorial territory is recommendation with consequences—explaining not only what I like, but what another maker should consider before investing time and material.

The next challenge is to deepen participation without turning a slow craft into another demand for constant output. Future experiments may include guides, recurring small gatherings or more structured learning formats.
